Walgett is an explorers paradise
Walgett is an explorers paradise. It has a proud history of early pioneers who survived against great odds and used their ingenuity to improve their quality of life and to revolutionise industries of the time.
Today, it is still remarkable people who make "the outback" their home and who guarantee the future of the "backbone of Australia's economy" and continue the legendary mateship that built it.
Walgett has a population of almost 3,000 people, comprising a large Aboriginal community. Walgett is famous for the Freedom Ride. On February 16, 1965, a demonstration was held in Walgett against the exclusion of Aboriginal people from local clubs and hotels. The demonstration marked the beginning of the NSW Freedom Ride, which drew attention to, and helped end, many discriminatory practices throughout Australia.
